The Hornets were able to win consecutive homecoming games by defeating Norfolk State Spartans 14-7.In a very ugly and grind-it-out type of game, it was the defense that made this victory possible.

Not only did the Hornets get their first two interceptions of the season, but they also totaled a season-high five turnovers. The defense also held the Spartans to only 184 total yards, which is the best the Hornets have done all year.

The Spartans struck first by scoring off a turnover in the second quarter. The first half didn’t show much for the Hornets, but excitement was created whenever Joe Boyd returned an interception for a touchdown right before halftime. Unfortunately, there was a penalty on the play and it got returned.

The Hornets game-winning drive was very impressive. They had 18 plays, converted on three third-down and also converted on two fourth-downs.

Cory Murphy was six-of-nine for 58 yards on the drive, and also added the game-winning score on a one-yard run. Murphy was 14-of-25 for 112 yards and three interceptions.

Malik Golson has seven catches for 56 yards. Dae-Hon Cheung added 66 yards on 11 carries.

Ernest Adjei had a career-high 16 tackles. After a rough start, the Hornets are now 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC.

The Hornets will travel Saturday to play North Carolina A&T.
